DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Nimble

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Glue gun

INSPIRATION:
Can power tools, manufactured at low cost and designed for mass distribution, be optimized focusing on a more sustainable design? Without changing the inner components, can the reduction of the materials used, become the distinguishing mark of a product? From this guess the concept of Nimble was born. The chosen product has been a heat gun of medium-low price that had obvious ergonomic and mechanical problems together with a charmless and a neglected aesthetic.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The sustainable design of Nimble was achieved by working on details: the trigger is designed to accommodate all the fingers of the hand, becoming a complementary element of the handle. The glue spot has become a visible element that allows the feedback on the progress of the stick. The internal components, except the power, remained unchanged, speeding up the process of integration of the new style and removing the defect of the anchor of the spring through internal changes.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Nimble presents a stand that simplifies all the possible operations, this stand can also be removed in case of need: it raises the heat gun from the ground facilitating its gripping and cooling down eventual drops of glue; the power cable sticks out from the body without any tension and turning the stand, Nimble can be attached to a hook. The shape of the trigger welcomes the hand for a better control on the push of glue sticks.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in June 2012 in Rome and finished in September 2012 in Rome, and was exibited in ISIA ROMA - 40's Exhibition in March 2014.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The initial sketches have been made on blocks of extruded polystyrene. Subsequently, the forms were analysed on parametric software in order to create a file suitable for the CNC milling machine and to gain information about the specific weight of the materials that will be used. The final model was made of MDF and PVC foam and then painted. However, for the industrial production, the bodies of the heat gun are meant to be made of PA6 through injection moulding.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Width 130 x Depth 30 x Height 175

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
With the goal of creating a product that can be inserted immediately in the market, the concept has passed from a series of mockups, to the engineering of the final choice on parametric softwares to handle the shapes ergonomically, in particular the one of the trigger and the grip. The final model was realised with a CNC milling machine. The results were then analysed through Ecolizer 2.0, which highlighted the reduction of plastics by 33% compared to the original model.

CHALLENGE:
The biggest challenge for the realization of Nimble was to find a new shape optimized from the material waste point of view, which would still contain the same internal components. The parametric 3D modelling has helped me to shape the forms and to make sure that the progress of the glue, the rotation of the trigger and the position of the hand during the use, were correct. Moreover, being a product designed for injection molding, it was fundamental to eliminate any kind of undercut.

NAME:
ISIA ROMA

PROFILE:
ISIA Rome is Italy's oldest institution in the field of industrial design. It was founded by Giulio Carlo Argan in 1965 as Industrial Design and Visual Communication Course for architects and engineers, and changed its name in 1973. Since many years, ISIA has set up a careful rework of the conceptual paradigms of the design, defined as "Design of the Systems". The systemic design is the discipline that allows to define and schedule the flow of material flowing from one system to another in a continuous metabolism that decreases the ecologic footprint and generates a significant economic flow. The project organizes and optimizes all actors and partners within the field, so that they can develop, evolving in line with each other. The individual parts of the system are intertwined, forming a virtuous network of relations between the matter flows, energy and information.
