Profile: Kyung Kim

About Kyung Kim : Dr. Kyung Kim is an Associate professor at the Korea Institute of Energy Technology (KENTECH) founded with the aim of being the world's only university specializing in energy with support from the Korea government and the Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO). There Dr. Kim has served as a Director of the Center for Education Innovation that aims to develop, deploy, critique, and study state-of-art- educational approaches and technologies to address the central challenge of how to promote deep learning and so ‘usable knowledge’ via rich field-initiated learning experiences for students, with the belief that the motivation to solve a problem becomes the motivation to learn. Dr. Kim's research interests focus on looking at how knowledge is structured in the mind of individuals and visualizing the knowledge structure using network technologies. So far his lab has designed and developed various award-winning AI based technologies that can capture, visually represent, and compare knowledge structure in learners' multimodla data in their learning process so that instructors can assess individual students' learning trajectories for more personalized learning environment. Dr. Kim won the 2019 Young Researcher Award, 2021 Outstanding Development Award, and 2022 Outstanding Journal Article Award from the Associaiton for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT), the oldest and largest academic organization in educaitonal technology in the world. With the recognition of his achievements, Dr. Kim was honored to become a recipient of 2022 Outstanding Young Researcher Award from American Educational Research Association (AERA), the most prestigious educational organization in the world.
