Interview with Jong Won Park at Tuesday 2nd of April 2019

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
JWP: I worked in the game, animation, feature film industry during 15 years with concept artist, concept designer, illustrator position, and I became the artist, designer from when I start work with one of design company 15 years ago, of course I wanna get called 'designer' or ' artist' from someone because I always pursue make artistic things that doesn't matter drawing, painting, picture, video clip whatever also usually I created digital artwork with PC, photoshop, tablet but at this moment I have lot of interesting about traditional artwork like a draw with actual pen, pencil, brush, water color, even acrylic ,oil on the canvas or paper .

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
JWP: my design studios called ' JC park Creative Studios ' usually get some outsourcing work from several kind of game, animation, feature film company sometimes we get some work from special company that like a theme park company, broadcast company, book cover design also.

FS: What is "design" for you?
JWP: happy to make people, also make much more happy to creators, living quality make much higher .

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
JWP: creativity , unique ,beautiful

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
JWP: I really love design of LEGO bricks, because that is just simple single design have but people can be use this to much better design , means quite open to expanding much further more.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
JWP: I was design about skin design of company website with illustration, 15 years ago, that was my first design for the company.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
JWP: usually everything, if that can be create or make, mixed something, for example actual fabric canvas, material, PC, tablet , gaming console, audio, book , most everything.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
JWP: when I suddenly saw the some of picture, movie, design from someone. or sometimes when I heard some of music, song , of course I feel the creative idea.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
JWP: creativity , unique , unusual things usually I pursued , focusing on.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
JWP: usually happy , and shaking the mind, heart.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
JWP: really, really happy.

FS: What makes a design successful?
JWP: should be useful , add some of unique outline, things the never seen before and most of people loved that then I thinks that is successful design.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
JWP: maybe don't have repulse feeling, first consider.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
JWP: human life make much better than before.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
JWP: much more simple but included fresh, creative things.

FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
JWP: unfortunately I did't have any exhibition experience yet so hopefully getting winner of this competition then make my 1st exhibition with A design award in Como.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
JWP: from everything. which means for example, when I saw some of pen on the table suddenly I feeling the inspiration so I always observation everything, every element, every product also even things that nothing special.

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
JWP: my design , art style pursued much more simple, and basically beautiful if everyone see that. nothing special and doesn't complicate, which means when I designing something my sight is just from normal person, nothing expert of design. just when I refining design finally I just see with expert sight.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
JWP: I originally from South Korea where living during 35 years and now I living in Germany during 4 years. I thinks those 2 kind of place have pros and cons , Korea have good environment that combined between past old things and present things but usually focusing on contemporary things, compare with Korea, Germany have good preservation environment from long time ago, so we can see more easily there's history on the building, something whatever. both of this things affect to my design. better or not.

FS: How do you work with companies?
JWP: got a work description from the company, clients then doing first rough design and send back quickly and getting feedback and refining .. repeat this process then could be reduce misunderstanding .

FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
JWP: respect is important and trust also. I usually respect and trust to company, client also same with me from the company most of time that my experience.

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
JWP: got a description , and if necessary then we have to make meeting for initial sketch or rough and then I work for rough initial image and sent to client and then getting feedback quickly ,constantly continuing and afterward we can approach to final result.

FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
JWP: painting frame, fridge , laptop , small flowerpot, and LEGO bricks.

FS: Can you describe a day in your life?
JWP: morning wake up and preparing something that send to school for my sons and come to company and work, after work get back home, take care of children , when they are come to bed then I start my personal designing work.

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
JWP: I'd like to say just simply word , famous word, but really strong word, one is ' think different ' this is really important if you make just common things then people don't keep watching , interesting, so if possible should show much different idea or design to audience. second is ' just do it ' when you designing something please don't hesitated trying. which mean never afraid of fail.

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
JWP: positives things is designer make much more good living place in our planet constantly with great sensibility design product, element , and so on. so could have special pride, self respect, rewarding kind of. and just small negatives things, sometimes payment doesn't satisfy to designer, but could be overcome something like this with passion of design.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
JWP: just looking good things that should from most of people not only just from designer sight

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
JWP: hand skill, or something other physical skill is most doesn't important I thinks most important thing is creative thinking with think different. and willing and patience also important to designer as well

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
JWP: usually pen, that could be approach to first initial idea could exposure to outside from thinking about. also use PC, internet for researching reference, and for expanding idea

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
JWP: I usually lot of time expend to designing , but sometimes time would not enough I just keep thinking about relevant design constantly , when I eating , sleeping for example, then when I start again to designing then much easier for approaching to final designing.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
JWP: definitely depend on each project design but usually spend a time around 1-2 weeks for researching reference and actual designing work would take 1 week that criterion something like a 'Rainy Day' that I already put on this competition.

FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
JWP: what is most inspiration to you ?

FS: What was your most important job experience?
JWP: when I designed some of Robot concept for SAMSUNG advertising around 1 and half years ago, because this is first time experience approach that excepted game , movie, even animation industry. also they make much great video clip, even statue with my design work.

FS: Who are some of your clients?
JWP: most of clients included in game, feature film and animation industry in my case

FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
JWP: most of interest and enjoy to kind of drawing or painting design work. because I usually enjoy something draw and paint to somewhere even my most of career timeline existed with there.

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
JWP: my final goal is make some of sensibility painting that would be traditional art work also that doesn't matter what kind of painting tools used and maybe that enjoyed from lot of people even next and next generation , constantly.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
JWP: I usually work myself, that is simple and slightly avoid misunderstanding each other.

FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
JWP: I would say about my one of another traditional artwork that also drawing , with paper and sharp pencil and finally finishing with black color brush, that name is 'Alley' this work describe kind of footage about normal people crowd also combined with future things in current environment.
