| DESIGN NAME: Blue and White history book PRIMARY FUNCTION: This is book art and publication design. INSPIRATION: The Blue and White porcelain is famous history in China. Words and images can document history. I believe the book art is not only documentation but also a sculpture. I bring this idea to my book artwork. For me, the pattern around the porcelain contains the history and culture of China. The book contains two parts. One is in English and another one is in Chinese. This the culture combination. Words overlap words like the history refreshing. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Blue and White porcelain is a famous culture in China.It is one of the significant beautiful cultures in the history of China.I read through the book"Yuan And Ming Blue And White From Jiangxiï OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The concept of this book comes from the Blue and White Porcelain in Chinese history. Patterns around the edge of the book are made of words and sentences. Half book in Chinese and half in English. It documents many kinds of Blue and White Porcelains. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2018 at Virginia Commonwealth University in the USA and finished in December 2018. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: 70lb Martine paper; Cardboard; Magnet; Laser cut. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The hight is 8.5inches and each page's width is 1.2 inches. The size of page is an irregular shape. This is a book with over 80 pages. 40 pages in English and 40 pages in Chinese. Two part books can be connected by magnets which is in the cover. Words on the edge like pattern around the book. TAGS: Culture, History, Patterns, Sculpture, Book art, Publication design, Words design RESEARCH ABSTRACT: As for the research, I read many files and history books to collect different kinds of Blue and White porcelains. Researching more for this book to translate and correct into English and simplified Chinese. How to translate English or traditional Chinese words into simplified Chinese is one of the challenge parts during the design. Also, during the laser cut, how to use that laser cut to cut the correct shape on my book is another hard part. After cutting, using glue to connect page by page and thinking a way to connect two parts book is the most challenge question. I tried different magnets and tried different methods to put these inside the cover which was hardly be identified. CHALLENGE: The hardest and most challenge part of this design activity is how to print on the edge of the book. First, I tried to use technology to print on the edge of the book. But it failed and it did not look great. After that, I tried to print the patterns on the paper and through the folding way to show these patterns on the edge. It looks great.
