DESIGN NAME:
Hidden Treasure

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Brooch and Ring

INSPIRATION:
Nature always seems to get it right first. Spider webs inspire advances in engineering and online technology. I have drawn my inspiration for Hidden Treasure from the perseverance of spiders in spinning their webs and in various kinds of colors and forms of spiders.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Hidden Treasure Collection was designed for my client, whose request was to create a spider jewelry that could be worn equally in a casual way and for evening events. Clear lines and a minimum of gems make this collection be used for everyday wear. Two colors of gold and deep red gems add luxury to the design, which could be worn for special occasions. Spider body on the brooch contains kinetic elements with a built-in swinging mechanism, which allows two parts open in the opposite directions. The exclusive multifunction design of collection brings more pleasure and satisfaction for the owner.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The brooch could be worn as a pendant, using the frame of the web as a bail for the chain. Domed web hides a brooch pin and protects from touching the skin. The kinetic design of the brooch allows two elements to be open and to show a hidden gem. The sliding elements could be left swinging freely in a rhythm with the body or be fixed in the open or closed position. The transformation helps to change the look of the jewelry for different situations. The web geometry of the ring makes the design elegant and very comfortable to wear. Clear design allows to wear it in a casual way. Two colors of gold and deep red gems add luxury to the design.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
From the concept to actual completion the project took 6 months and completed in Carlsbad in March 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The client chose the multifunctional kinetic design for a brooch and clean modern design for a ring from several different designs. I used similar gem material and maintained the same color range for two items. Since the brooch had white and yellow gold parts and the ring had only white gold, I used yellow sapphires on the shank of the ring. The swinging mechanism was developed during 3D modeling. 6 elements were modeled, printed into a castable wax, and produced by lost-wax casting process with WG and YG. Every element was pre-polished, adjusted and assembled; gems were set in.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Ring dimensions: 21x16x29 mm. Finger Size 7; White Gold 14Kt Total weight of the ring: 5,1 gr Brooch/Pendant dimensions 31x9x36mm. Total weight of the brooch: 8,0 gr; White and Yellow Gold 14Kt

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The research has been made on kinetic jewelry. The results indicate that moving elements are not commonly used in jewelry, but this trend is in demand and will develop. In addition, kinetic designs are extremely rare for spider jewelry and mostly used with one moving element. Thus, it was decided to construct the spider with two swinging aside elements and to hide a gemstone behind them. In order to test the swinging mechanism of the brooch and to check the possible issues during the casting process the brass prototypes of the brooch and the ring were produced by a traditional lost-wax casting process and assembled.

CHALLENGE:
To transfer the design geometry and a swinging mechanism into digital model with T-Spline; to test moving parts with Matrix; to develop a clear elegant design for a big stone, which usually looks bulky and heavy; to find the same color granite cabochon matching with the gem on the ring; to make the same appearance for the brooch and the ring, which were chosen by the client from originally different designs. The same appearance was achieved by using the same color pattern for both pieces: red - stones, white - white gold as main material, yellow - yellow gold for spider body on the brooch and yellow sapphires for the ring.
