DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Digital

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Chaiselongue

INSPIRATION:
The Digital Chaiselongue emerged from a collaboration of Viennese product designer Philipp Aduatz with Austrian company incremental3d from Innsbruck. Incremental3d is a startup company from Austria founded in September 2017 by Georg Grasser, Johannes Ladinig and Lukas Haertenberger. They have been doing research in the field of concrete printing the last years together at the University of Innsbruck in Austria and have developed a new and innovative technology for concrete 3D printing.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The sculptural design language by Philipp Aduatz is realized by the use of an innovative digital fabrication technology that allows to 3D print very detailed concrete geometries in a very fast time. The concept is to use the new technology developed by incremental3d for a complex freeform design by Philipp Aduatz and show the new possibilities of creating complex shapes in an application for furniture design.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The Digital Chaiselongue can be used by one ore more persons as a lounger or bench and is also suitable for a permanent outdoor use. It is designed to be a landmark in the field of concrete structures and due to its sculptural design it can also function as an artwork in public space.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The collaboration started in the fall of 2017 and the first prototype of the Chaiselongue was printed in January 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
For the Digital Chaiselongue a negative mould was first 3D printed from concrete. Afterwards the complete geometry was printed in less than one hour onto the mould. To provide sufficient tensile strength, carbon fibres are inserted in sensitive areas. The seating area was finished using a UV-resistant polyurethane coating in delicate handcraft, this should demonstrate that craft and digital technologies can coexist for the purpose of innovation in the 21st century in harmony.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
220, 75, 85 cm Concrete 3D printed, carbon fibre reinforced, polyurethane coating

TAGS:
3D printing, new technologies, concrete, carbon fibre, Chaiselongue, robot, digital fabrication, organic design, freeform design

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Through a deep research in 3D printing with the aim to find a technology that is able to realize complex shapes in a very short time, Aduatz discovered the technology of incremental3d which is using an adapted version of contour crafting: unlike other concrete printers, this technology allows to print fine and detailed freeform geometries very fast with a high resolution closely to the established Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) technology using polymers. No moulds or support structures are necessary, the freedom of form has a new meaning with this process by using a six-axis robot.

CHALLENGE:
The biggest challenge was the programming of the 6 axis robot and to generate a suitable code for the geometry. Also challenging were the calculations for the load bearing abilities of the object and where the carbon fibers hat to be placed to provide enough stability for the object.

NAME:
Philipp ADuatz

PROFILE:
Vienna based Designer Philipp Aduatz creates limited edition functional objects that are highly sculptural in nature. Working with innovative materials and fabrication technologies, Aduatz is very much influenced by scientific matters such as chemistry, physics and material technologies. His process combines traditional craft concepts and techniques with cutting edge implements such as 3D printing, 3D laser scanning, CNC milling, and Rapid Prototyping. Greatly influenced by sculptors such as Constantin Brancusi and Tony Cragg, the designer aims to develop a new language of form in each of his pieces, encouraging a new discourse between the object and its user or viewer.
