DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Unobstructed Freedom

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Residential House

INSPIRATION:
As technology becomes more engrained in society, human beings have become more solitary and distant from one another. The idea behind this design is to remove any barriers that would separate the residents and create a clear view of the entire flat. This in turn would also open the area for more freedom of movement and floor usage. The design employs an industrial style as well, which it does through the use of its black, grey and white color scheme.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
One key feature of the design is we took down all pre-existing walls within the flat. What was once a two-bedroom residence became a single giant living area. As per the request of the residents, the centerpiece of the design is the bathtub and bathroom which is located in the middle of the unit. Surrounding the bathroom are two see-through glass screens. In case there are visitors, the screens can be covered up with lowering curtains. Likewise for other areas in the unit, there are built-in curtains that can be lowered from the ceiling. Connectivity between areas is seamless as residents have the ability to see from one corner of the unit to the other without any barriers in the way.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Designed with openness in mind, the unit is fundamentally public and bares everything it has from the get-go. However, due to the possibility of guests, it does require an element of privacy. Certain parts of the unit can be sanctioned off with the use of curtains that can be manually lowered. An L-shaped table was employed in-between the kitchen and work area, which acts as a writing desk or dining table depending on how the residents want to use it. Multifunctional elements such as this can be seen in the open living area as well. Due to the amount of space it has, it can be a studio or sports area.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project finished in March 2015 in Hong Kong

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Total area: 400 sq ft

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The residents are a young couple that wants to hide nothing from each other and wants to express that through their living space. In order to serve their desires on top of satisfying the basic requirements of a home, we looked at how we could balance the public and private areas.

CHALLENGE:
The residents of the unit specifically requested that the bathroom and bathtub be at the center of the unit. Due to the uniqueness of such a requirement, we made our design choices around the bathroom. We shifted the original layout and created space for a laundry room and shoe cabinet. The bathroom itself was designed with openness in mind. There is enough space within the room for residents to put any sort of furnishes.

Artwill is a residential and commercial interior design firm from Hong Kong established in 2002. They are known for their modern and minimalistic styles anchored on a well-planned spatial design. Walking into an Artwill interiors, it is obvious with the placement of furnishings and dimensions that they are designing on a human scale, with ergonomics and comfort in mind.
