DESIGN NAME:
Architectural Decoration

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Book

INSPIRATION:
Through many visits to the oldest Chinese temple in Singapore I discovered many unique and interesting symbolic images. When I researched further, it remained a mystery, and no one, not even the people who take care of the temple, could provide answers to the meaning behind some of these symbolic images. I decided to research and understand the meaning of these images. Moreover, I am a Hokkien, therefore it is important for me to understand my own culture and roots: how my ancestors designed these symbolic images more than 1,000 years ago.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This book introduces the reader to the symbolic images of Singaporean temples built in the Hokkien style. Each of the texts explains the meaning, mythology, setting and materials behind the symbolism. To enhance the value of these cultural images, the book is designed as a traditional bamboo scroll, which allows for the depiction of a continuous narrative; the viewing is a progression through time and space. Each book consists of 225 bamboo strips, measuring 4.35 metres in length, and takes about five days to be produced.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
This book is deliberately made in the format of traditional bamboo scroll, which allows for the depiction of a continuous narrative: the viewing is a progression through time and space.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in Feb 2011 and finished in May 2014 in Singapore. The book was exhibited in Red Top Gallery at 789 Art District in Beijing China on May 2014.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The printers in Singapore were unable to produce the book as the bamboo material was a major issue, and their laser machines cannot achieve the details that I wanted. In the end, I had it produced in China. The Chinese printer experimented with more than 10 different threads to find the right one to hold the weight of the scroll. Each book took about five days to complete as it involves handwork to tie the more than 200 bamboo strips to form one book and laser engraving is also done manually.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Focusing on Hokkien architectural-style temples in Singapore, the purpose seeks to understand the origin and the meaning of the symbolic images in these temples, and analysis the visual culture differences between these temples that built from 1800s to 1900s. It also aims to serve as visual references for the construction of future Hokkien architectural-style buildings. Symbolic images were collected and analyzed based on four themes: Animals, Plants, Objects and Human figures, to discover the cultural meaning behind each image.

CHALLENGE:
Taking photos of the temples were not easy, as we were not allowed to set-up any equipment when photographing symbols on the roofs or ceilings. On researching the symbolic images, I had to fly to Taiwan to interview and clarify with the temple caretakers to make sure that my information gathered in Singapore was correct. We hand-drew more than 150 illustrations of the symbols, and our eyes were seeing stars after a few images as they are very fine and detailed. It took us about eight months to finish.
