DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Marion Park Masterplan

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Mixed Use Buildings

INSPIRATION:
Drawing on the same geographic elements which Walter Burley and Marion Mahoney Griffin used in their prize-winning design proposal for Canberra, we have strived to express in built form the indigenous landscape of Ngunnawal country. Each of the buildings has evolved with an organic topographical form reminiscent of the local hill side landscapes. Knowles Place has been considered as urban park emulating Lake Burley Griffin & the Molonglo River as they flow through the Parliamentary Triangle.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Marion Park master plan envisions an iconic architectural landmark in the heart of the Nation’s Capital, embodying top-tier environmental, social, and governance standards. It will offer diverse housing options, including affordable units, designed with sustainability and liveability in mind. Innovative Passiv Haus principles and onsite renewable energy generation will pave the way for economically viable pathways to Net Zero operation via Greenpower, ensuring a sustainable future.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Passive design principles reduce cooling and heating demand, following Passiv Haus standards. Intelligent occupant sensing controls decrease energy usage by adjusting light and air-conditioning in unoccupied areas. Responsible water management is integrated with sustainability goals, aiming for net-zero carbon operation, Nathers 7-star rating, and adherence to Passiv Haus principles.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project was master planned between June and August 2023.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Architecture, Building and Structure Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Our goal is to integrate sustainability into design, construction, and operation, aligning with City Renewal Authority's initiatives. We aim for Net Zero operation through onsite renewables and "Greenpower," using passive design and occupant sensing controls to minimize energy demand. These measures meet environmental, health, and economic objectives while supporting climate resilience and Authority's sustainability goals.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Combined the five buildings have a total of approximately 456 residential units, providing a variety of housing typologies designed to functionally meet the intergenerational requirements of individuals, partners and families. The design consists of 2 corner elliptical buildings, each 17 stories and 3 mid-rise structures, each with seven levels. The project includes food and beverage outlets, commercial and retail offices and a community center allowing users to live and play within the district.

TAGS:
Masterplan, Mixed-Use, Residential, Commercial, Retail, Park

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The research laying the fundamentals of the project are based around delivering sustainability initiatives. Key initiatives are passive solar design, optimizing natural ventilation, responsible water management, developing for a green city, growing for long term, maximizing green spaces and moving away from non-renewable energy sources.

CHALLENGE:
The challenge was to develop a master plan that would meet sustainable targets with a unique organic design inspired by the surrounding nature on a prime located site.

NAME:
Contreras Earl Architecture

PROFILE:
Contreras Earl Architecture is led by Rafael Contreras and Monica Earl. We founded Contreras Earl Architecture to design original, inventive, ground-breaking buildings that contribute to the evolution of architecture and toward a better future for our communities and cities. We create buildings, spaces, masterplans and objects that are biologically informed and digitally engineered. From mid-sized commercial buildings and mixed-use developments to high-end apartments and bespoke objects, it’s not about the scale of the project, but the scale of clients’ ambition. As architects, we are problem solvers and innovators. We challenge old conventions and contribute new ideas. We believe architecture should evolve with technology, and we embrace the latest technology to push the boundaries of architecture. By using advanced software, robotics, materials and construction processes, we are liberated from traditional building practices and forms, and free to explore more creative, avant-garde ideas. Our design process is driven by the careful analysis of contemporary life and the desire to create buildings that coexist with the built and natural environment. We synthesise research and understand patterns in nature to deliver site-specific solutions that are rich, beautiful and functional – like the natural world. The architecture that emerges is innovative and advanced, imbued with warmth, soul and artistry. Sculptural forms and organic lines encourage public engagement and optimise environmental performance. These are not just grand gestures or bold forms, but reflect our design ethos to realise a better world. Freed from tradition and convention, we can contribute to the evolution of architecture, and together we can create a better future for our urban and natural environments. Rafael and Monica commenced their careers working with two of the most well-recognised global architecture practices: Zaha Hadid Architects and Foster + Partners. Rafael led international teams in Zaha Hadid Architect’s exclusive ‘design cluster’ in London, working directly under Zaha Hadid and Patrik Schumacher. He was a design leader for the Grand Theatre in Rabat Morocco, Tokyo National Stadium and the New Beijing Daxing Airport (the world’s largest airport terminal), as well as large-scale residential and mixed-use projects across Australia. Monica’s experience working for Foster + Partners, Carmody Groarke and acclaimed architect and theorist Farshid Moussavi crosses a broad range of sectors from heritage to cultural. At Foster + Partners, Monica worked on prestigious large-scale developments, including ICD Brookfield Place Dubai, and at Carmody Groarke she was involved in the British Museum and Windermere Jetty Museum in England’s Lake District. Other Contreras Earl Architecture projects include world’s first Living Coral Biobank in Port Douglas, Australia and Skyportz-Australia's First Air Taxi Vertiport.
