DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Carbon Roaming

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Motion Graphcis Animation

INSPIRATION:
Carbon research is an academic journal based on related research areas and dedicated to the cause of ecological protection. In response to the need to warm up the academic conference and deepen the impression to participants, based on the founding philosophy of the journal and elements of carbon atom and earth in the logo, designers created a visual roaming experience from micro-atomic evolution to macro-universe inspired by the composition of matter in the carbon-based world.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The animation starts from the logo, by using motion graphics, it shows a circulation of an electron changing into carbon atom, molecule and monomer at microscopic scale, and then to carbon-based organisms and earth in macroscopic scale, finally back to the logo, which implies carbon cycle. Designers used basic white points and lines to express various concepts on a dark canvas. And the changing rhythm of the graphics is closely integrated with the beat of the soundtrack to increase the tension.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The animation is mainly used for the opening video of the academic communication conference hosted by Carbon Research and other related branding work.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started on Oct. 20, 2022 and finished on Nov. 5, 2022 in Beijing, and will be presented at a conference being held in March 2023.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Movie, Video and Animation Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The animation was produced with a mix of 2D and 3D technology. For 2D, designers mainly used Adobe After Effert’s vector graphics animation and particle effectors combined with Adobe Illustrator. And for 3D, designers used Houdini's growth animation and Cel shading technology. Besides these, to ensure the efficiency of team work and seamless combination of results in each stage, a standardized workflow for the whole process were developed.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The duration of the animation is 45 seconds. The aspect ratio of animation is 16:9.

TAGS:
Motion graphics, animation, brand promotion, logo, academic journal, carbon, ecological protection

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Logo is the first impression most people have of a brand. The aim of this animation is to deepen impression of the journal in a short time. Designers thought that an animation with the logo as the core, combined with concept of journal, would be a good choice. the variation and repetition of the elements of the logo would guide people's imagination and deepen their impression. Also the contrasting images and the strong rhythmic music echoing the graphic changes will also focus people's attention.

CHALLENGE:
Combinations and variations of simple vector patterns to express the substances evolution process from microscopic to macroscopic and to form a complete circulation around the logo is the biggest challenge of orchestration, which has been pondered for a long time. Achieving a rich, smooth visual experience using only basic geometric dots and lines is the biggest technical challenge. To solve this, designers adopted 2D plus 3D technology and developed a standardized workflow for animation producing.
