| DESIGN NAME: Mobius PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair INSPIRATION: The Mobius Chair was inspired by the beauty and complexity of mathematics. The mobius strip’s shape has been translated into the chair’s design, creating a continuous loop that appears to have no beginning or end, granting it a feeling of fluidity and authenticity. This design seeks to challenge traditional notions of form and function, offering a unique user experience while being aesthetically striking. The design is a testament to the power of mathematical concepts in art and design. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Mobius strip is a mathematical object of most unique physical and mathematical qualities, constructed with only a single side and a single edge. These qualities have been utilised in the Mobius Chair to create an intriguing, timeless piece. The bold design is an embodiment of infinity, creating a feeling of fluidity, of never-ending movement. Its unique shape and structure allow this piece to blend form and function, creating a comfortable piece that may also serve as work of art. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Due to it's intriguing design, the Mobius Chair can be displayed as an art piece, a display stand or as a functional piece of furniture. The chair's construction allows it to flex when in use, easing the user into a comfortable position. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Mobius Chair was designed in February 2023 in Sydney. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Mobius Chair is constructed through the use of multiple sections of cast iron. These sections are subsequently welded together. With a rough finish, the chair is then spray painted a deep blue. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 1700 mm x Depth 780 mm x Height 1000 mm TAGS: Furniture, metal, chair, avant garde, art RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This design emerged from an exploration of mathematics and the underlying beauty of complex geometry. CHALLENGE: The challenge of the Mobius Chair is ensuring that when in use, it is able to sufficiently support an individual and place them such that the chair is not tipped by one’s weight.
