DESIGN NAME:
Islamic Identity

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Branding Islamic Identity

INSPIRATION:
Current Islamic Design in the Middle East.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The brand identity was designed for a designer who works as an interior and a graphic designer. The brief was to create a luxurious, decorative, design that manifest the richness of Islamic history and embraces modernity. The brand identity was designed based on two geometric shapes, the circle and the square to portray the mixture between the two fields of design (interior and graphic design.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The design serves as an identity for a (graphic/ interior) designer. It communicates the person's personality.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in 2012 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The two basic geometric shapes (circle, and square) were used as the basic elements in the motif. The design looks symmetrical because of the circle placed in the middle of the design of the letterhead to highlight tradition. However, the structure of the design is asymmetrical to emphasize modern design. None of the patterns were repeated in the same design (letterhead and business card) to show diversity from the basic unit.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
letterhead 210 mm x 297 mm, Business card size 89 mm × 51 mm, Envelope size 230 x 110 mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
As the client was an interior/ graphic designer, the research was based on finding a link between the two fields. The methodology of research started by conducting qualitative and visual research methods. The result of the research was to find a link between modern and traditional Islamic patterns in the fields of graphic and interior design. The challenge was to create a pattern based on these diverse elements. Accordingly, two basic shapes were chosen as the basic elements for the motif to reflect the concept.

CHALLENGE:
The challenge was to create a pattern based on Islamic design to reflect the two different fields of the client. The pattern had to look modern yet inspired from traditional Islamic art. Also, it had to convey interior and graphic design as they are the two fields the client's has as a career. Accordingly, two basic shapes were chosen as the basic elements for the motif to reflect the concept.
