DESIGN NAME:
Ete Ring

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Slice Diamond Ring Band

INSPIRATION:
The name 'Ete' is short of eternity, which refers to the design objective: create something that never goes out of style and forever remembered. The inspiration behind this ring comes from my background and education. Growing up in Hong Kong, you are surrounded by daring concepts which influences me to create my personal style. Combining that with my education - Architecture Design - gives me the knowledge and logistics to move this style forward. When designing Ete rings, it was important to associate a classical minimalistic concept while maintaining the contemporary craze. The architecture of this ring is a band, a definitive shape that is appealed by all ages and can be worn to numerous events. The façade of Ete rings are the unique element; using slice diamonds in different shades (i.e. white-grey, light yellow, brown) complemented with white, yellow or rose gold circling the paisley cylinder frame. Each piece has its own specified materials, making them each one-of-a-kind. Additionally, the flat glass-like facade on slice diamonds reflect different rays of light in various ambiances, adding a bold character to the ring.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Ete is 18K gold diamond band rings that slip on to your finger to create an enhancive look. The rings are influenced by todays avant garde architecture design. I believe in mix media, mix cultures and dimensional structures, and when expressing these elements, it gives me the opportunity to create an abstract concept while still keeping a touch of elegance. I enjoy using materials such as slice diamonds which add a different ingredient of texture. A rough flat facade diamond has its own unique property; it makes the ring come to life, especially when you can see the different shades reflected on the diamond all the way around.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Ete rings are usually worn on any of your middle three fingers. The ring is scaled so it does not sit above your knuckle – allowing you to flexibly open and close your hand. Our quality control team has experimented with the rings to place the slice diamonds where our end client will experience no discomfort or damage. Overall, the aim is to create a fashion statement, however keeping comfort and flexibility as priority.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The 5 rings took up to 3 weeks to manufacture in Shun De, China in March 2012.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Ete is handmade jewellery. The basic architecture was molded around a band and placed with slice diamonds for it to create an impact. The white diamonds border the ring to visually enhance the curved exterior on the band. The paisley swirls inside the two level band impact a classic feminine feel to the ring, almost like the stems and leaves to a flower. When the composition comes together, it creates a recipe for the various slice diamonds and color combinations. Additional crowns are then made to hold these diamonds in place, and rhodium can be interchanged to add a twist.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
18K Gold - In White, Yellow, Rose. Black Rhodium. White Diamonds on the frame. Slice diamonds uniquely placed and assorted for each piece made. US Ring Size : 6.5.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Ete is created with classical architecture and garnished with modern vogue. The first challenge I came across was choosing the shape. To me, the basic structure had to be simple: a canvas I was able to work easily on, while providing comfort to the end user too. Ring bands have been running through generations where all kinds of people are familiar with the concept of the shape. Once I had decided on the eternal look, the aim was to then add value and design. It had to have unique character and overall balance, something which came through aggressive trial and error. The paisley designs under the slices are the personal touch to the body of the ring. Not only was I looking to use minimal gold without compromising, but it also gave me a lace mesh to work on for the second layer. This layer came with the placements of the slice diamonds. The flat pieces of diamond were tailored to the best fit of its exterior, making each design bespoke. The rings were experimented on women who worked in different environments to see what were the constraints and compliments for each design. This gave me an insight on positioning the diamonds in a different way, allowing me to develop newer pieces.

CHALLENGE:
There were a few challenges to the development of Ete. I wanted to create a universal product, but also unique in its own character. I believe now regardless of the color and slice diamonds on the ring, Ete has a consistent architecture that identifies itself. The use of minimal gold, yet a lace mesh sits comfortably on the finger, so it can be catered to all kinds of women. Above all, I wanted to have a ring that was going to go down traditions, mainly because of its design elements. Experimenting with shapes and numerous materials helped me come up with a design that even though is one of a kind, it has a recognizable element to it.
