DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Naming Spoon

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Spoon, gift

INSPIRATION:
The inspiration for the Naming Spoon came from a need to offer a modern and popular alternative to the traditional Christening present, of a spoon. I wanted to create a spoon that could be personalised and named as a 'Naming Spoon'. Naming Ceremonies, have increased in popularity in recent times. I wanted to create an object, the 'Naming Spoon', to be given at the Naming Ceremony or Christening Each 'Naming Spoon' is unique and can be personalised with the recipients Birth Stone and initialised. In our ever growing 'throw away' society I wanted to create an artefact that can be presented as an heirloom for the families heritage.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The 'Naming Spoon' can be embellished with the birthstone of the clients choosing. I wanted to make a spoon that was beautiful and could be kept as a decorative statement piece but also was functional. The 'Naming Spoon' is beautifully balanced and the bowl conforms to a child's mouth perfectly. All spoon handles are hand forged out of a solid piece of sterling silver. This method of construction makes each 'Naming Spoon' created slightly different and unique.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The length of the 'Naming Spoon' handle makes it easy for a young person to hold and the small size of the bowl easily conforms to a small mouth. The heavy duty gauges of metal used, makes the 'Naming Spoon' robust and useable. The unique design of the 'Naming Spoon' makes it a pleasure to use and when not in use is visually distinctive.

NAME:
Katherine Alexandra Brunacci

PROFILE:
My name is Katherine Alexandra Brunacci I am a jewellery designer/manufacturer based in Australia. I completed a Master of Fine Art majoring in gold and silver smithing at RMIT University in Melbourne in 2009. I also have completed a degree in Gemmology, Diamond grading and jewellery valuations. My work to date is been strongly influenced by historical jewellery pieces and ornamentation. My process is to study, deconstruct and manipulate old jewellery and decorative objects, then using a mixture of contemporary and traditional methods create a piece, which is contemporary but reflects aspects of its historical foundation. I am always seeking out antique fairs and flea markets, searching for pieces, which have elements that I can re- work into one of my designs. I also love the added bonus of stories and past lives that are part of some of these pieces. The stories can unexpectedly influence and transform the outcome of a work, which is part the fun. I love using traditional silversmithing techniques to manipulate the metal. By employing these skills each piece has its own unique characteristics and charm
