| DESIGN NAME: SPONTANEOUS | Kinetic Kontraption PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multi-Functional Table INSPIRATION: Working with a Community Centre in Ottawa, Ontario, and as a component of a Masters of Architecture Thesis. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This product (quickly and easily) transforms into a variety of configurations to suit a range of functional and aesthetic needs. Some of the options include: + Coffee Table, both small and large versions + TV Stand + Book Shelves, wall mounted or stacked on floor + Display Pieces + Light Table + more! *Please see, ‘Operation / Flow / Interaction’ and ‘Research Abstract’ sections to learn what sets SPONTANEOUS Custom Design apart from other customizable furniture designs. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The main purpose of Kinetic Kontraption is to suit each of its users’ individual needs. It essentially only has (3) parts in total, [*two identical wood boxes and one metal frame] which makes the product a simple piece of furniture to assemble, disassemble, customize, and fit in virtually any size of home. What makes it such an effective ‘customizable’ product is the patent ‘joint’ idea which connects the wood boxes to the metal frame. These characteristics in combination with other user-friendly details allows this product to transform into over (8) different options which are both quick and easy to transform. *Please see video link for Assembly Instructions, https://vimeo.com/42 PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The conceptual development for SPONTANEOUS Custom Design began in January 2012 and a full-scale prototype was completed on March 29th, 2012 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The prototype for Kinetic Kontraption was created at Azrieli School of Architecture wood and metal shops at Carleton University, Ontario, Canada. + No CNC milling machine was required for its production, although it could be useful for the creation of future models. + All shop work was done first hand by using an arrangement of machines; from table, radial, and mitre saws, wood lathes, splining, bisketing, paper-gluing techniques, to metal saws, welding, and manual metal bending and sanding processes. + All digital design work was created using AutoCAD 2012 and Rhino, Revit, and Cinema 4D files were also created for various 3D modelling purposes. The materials are fairly interchangeable; however, the prototype model was constructed with maple and maple plywood for all wood components and cold rolled steel rods and tube for all metal components. + Additional Hardware: (2) threaded rods with wing nuts and (4) adjusters [for metal frame legs] SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: (2) Wood Boxes_ 914.4mm [3'-0"]w x 304.8mm [1'-0"]l x 304.8mm [1'-0"]h (1) Collapsible Metal Frame_ 673.1 mm [2'-2 1/2"] (open position), 82.5 mm [3 1/4"] (close position) x 1'-0"h (with adjusters) TAGS: furniture, design, table, coffee table, configuration, kinetic, transform, change, custom, customization RESEARCH ABSTRACT: **Please see the Forward in the "uploaded document".
