DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
A Rhythmical shelf

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
A bookshelf

INSPIRATION:
I get the inspiration for this design in rhythm and shape of a stringed instrument such as a violin or guitar.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The features of this bookshelf correspond closely with curved shapes. It can be divided into 2 parts of body. The First part is 5 shelves. They are comprised of Bird’s eye maple which is usually used to make violins and guitars and we can see black edges in the borders. The Second part is 3 pillars. They consist of laminated birch plywood which can show layers effectively. The lines of laminated birch plywood represent strings of musical instruments.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Each pillar has 3 grooves to insert 3 shelves into the grooves; these are 2 shelves on the top and at the bottom of the pillar. The user can assemble and disassemble the pillar & shelves easily; that’s the reason why the shelves include wooden rails which have a same method as sliding drawers on the bottom of each shelf. Also the connection between the structures is very strong because of the wooden rails between the structures and pillars.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in June 2010 in Seoul and finished in December 2010 in Seoul, and was exhibited in Hong-ik University in December 2010.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Furniture Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
This product consists of Bird's eye maple and Birch plywood.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
* 1200mm x 600mm x 1800mm * Any user can assemble and disassemble the pillar & shelves easily; that’s the reason why the shelves include wooden rails which have a same method as sliding drawers on the bottom of each shelf. Also the connection between the structures is very strong because of the wooden rails between the structures and pillars.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:

CHALLENGE:
Designing with Birch Plywood and CNC - I used a CNC machine to cut birch plywood which has a UV stable coating. Grade B/BB Russian Birch Plywood was CNC machined to create the landscape contour effect . CNC machining is very accurate and means that all panels are identical, which helps to save time and money, especially where multiple components, or intricate detailing is required.
